Architect/Project Coordinator, Mount Severn, Llanidloes, Powys, April 2016 –
I am project coordinator/ecological design advisor for the restoration of this Grade 2 listed Georgian house set in a Picturesque landscape in mid-Wales. Work has included demolitions, extensions, sustainable design for services/fit-out, and a 14 acre landscape restoration including ‘follies’, ‘rewilding’ a ‘medicinal meadow’, and woodland management. My role is part of an ongoing creative collaboration with my clients, a musician, and a healer, founded on a commonly held respect for Welsh landscape, culture and ecology. Coordinating this project has given me an opportunity to reflect on the culture of construction, and with an exceptionally open-minded contractor, client and design team, we have made moves towards a feminist building site. From carefully rehoming/recycling/salvaging items from the demolition and making ecologically informed choices in materials/techniques, to inclusivity in decision-making, ’round table’ meetings and whole-team celebrations/rituals at project milestones, we have worked to infuse this project with generosity, honesty and self-care.
